The Hawkesbury Qrand Handicap will be contested on the 12th September, and is the first of the great events. 99 horses bave paid in, and half may be expected to face the starter. Welcome Jack (9stslbs), Vanguard (Bst 121bs) or Thunderbolt (7st 41bs) should have something to say in the contest. Mr W. Profitt has returned from the South, and intends to make Auckland his home for the future. At the hie meeting of the Auckland Coursing Club the protest against Patent was further considered, but was adjourned pending the arrival of evidence from the South. The protest against Ebonite, on the ground that she was not the dog entered on the night of general entry, was considered, and upon the •vidence of Mr Walnutt the protest was sustainedIt appears the owner, in the first instance, entered a dog, and the following day a bitch of the same name; the latter the runner-up at the late meeting. It is probable that Cutler will issue another challenge to Craig, of Cambridge, i who beat him in their half-mile run for £100, awhile back, for a fresh trial over the distance, but on Ellerslie Racecourse, in about six weeks' time. ,; W. Mathews, the American heavy weight pugilist, arrived from thejSonth last week, and is ready for work. H. Hutchens, champion sprinter, went at the 140 yards record at Lillie Bridge grounds on July Btb. Wind and weather dead against him, he gave D. Isaacs 174 yards start and beat him exactly the record (14 sees.) After a spell he again started with the wind behind him, and catching Isaacs hand over hand; broke the tape a yard and a half in front, and two x fifths of a second ahead of the record, which will now stand at thirteen three - fifths seconds.
