It is not improbable thut a main tunnel will be put through the ground, for tho purpose'of outting several lodes, oslebnftetikin thoir day. We' have been shown by Mr Jeffery, fruiterer, Brown street, a jfine sample of bananas juet to hand from the lalands, which Bhoulci ptove a welcome addition to tho available fruit supply, as i.he,market has been rather bare of tbis wholesome fruit of late He hue also received a splendid sample of red peirruain apples and other fruifa. Mv E. GK Book announces that he has jugt opened up a grand assortment of ladies jersey jackets, which he will clear at very low rates. Ladies! first read the advertisement, then in* spect the goods. Me Thomas Keven, an energetic young 1 Thamesite, announces through our advertising columns that he has commenced business »s a tobacconist in the premises next Allaway's Hotel in Brown street. With a well-assorted stock, combined with[attention to the wants of his customers, we doubt not that this new aspirant to smoking honors will obtain a fair share of patronage. The Pelton wheel, for which Messrs Price Bros, are the sole agents in New Zealand, continues to attract considerable attention as a means of motive power. Wo wore to-day shown by Mr W. B. Baker, butcher, of Pollen street, a neatly-made wheel of about four-horse power, used by him for driving his sausage machine, which is one with all the latest improvements, and works admirably. At the Pollen street Lecture Hall to-mor-row evening Mr E. H. Taylor will lecture on : —'^Living by a brook; its lesjons and their effect," while the usual services will be conducted at the Wesleynn churches. The manager of the Devon Gt.M. Co. notifies elsewhere that the mine will be open for inspection by visitors every Wednesday, from 12 to 1 o'clock. - j The Commiosion appointed to enquire into | the subject of Block 27 tenure will commence its sitting at the Court house on Wednesday next. .. ■•• ! Wk notice that the Equitable Insurance j Association of Now Zealand, the head quar- j ters of which are eituated in Dunedin, purpose sharing in the business to be done in their line on the Thames, and to that end have appointed Mr J. A. Roberts, of Parawai, their agent for this district. This company has a nominal capital of £1,000,000, of which £300,020 h«s been subscribed, while the Ha- j bility of shareholders is unlimited. The scope of the company includes both fire, marine, life, and accident insurance, but ifc is the latter two only which are at present to be pushed here. The principal feature in the Life Branch is that all policies on which two annual premiums have been paid are absolutely unforfoitable j so that in the event of an insurer through unforseen oir- I cumstances being in the course of time unable : to keep up his paymealg, he would still be insured to the extent of the payments he hid made. This is a good feature in the Company, and will probably induce a considerable amount of business. The Accident Branch should prove very suitable for the Thames district, and considering the small premiums required and the convenient manner in which they can be paid, miners, busbmen, mill-hands, and in fact all persons following occupations of a dangerous character should at once make provision for their wives and families, and render subscription lists—of which w« have seen far too many on the Thames—a thing of the past. Special arrangements can be made in tve cases •f miners and others, which the agent will be glad to explain to all interested. Mr J. Or. Baker is the manager of the Auckland district for the Association. Iw the volunteer fracas at Devonport, Auckland, in which Private Slattery, of the Devonport Navols, assaulted E; N.U.Forder, journalist on a weekly society paper, in conse quence of an article reflecting on the corps, the Magistrate ordered Slattery to find sureties to keep tho peace and pay costs, seven guineas. The Court was filled with Navale. Colonel Lyon occupied a seat in the Court.
