BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual meeting of the above Council was held in the Chambers last evening, Present—Crs McGowan, (in the Chair), Bawden, McAndrew, Reid, Rensbaw, Wilson, and Wood. Dearie, reminding the Council that somethreeor foitT years ago they had lodged £100 in the hands of the Government Land Purchase! officer towards the ..completiont.of the purchase.-.of. the south part of Maungakirikiri No. 3 Block, from which the water-supply was derived, and enquiring whether the Council would advance about £10 to pay to the obdurate owner one-half "interest to which.the Government refused to give more than in the previous offer. The consideration of the matter was deferred until next meeting.-— Mr T. Williams, asking permission to use Lot. 1 of the Borough Recreation Ground, as he had purchased the adjoining section's. Referred to the Works Committee.—Mr 0, McLean, applying for the use of the lower end o| the underground Waiotahi culver t for the" purpose "of saving tailings, and offering to keep the flume : free from debris and pay an annual rental of £20.—An application was likewise received from Mr W. Climp for permission to convey water from.the elevated aqueduct to a>new"sluice-head underneath it, and if this application were granted, asking also for the use of the old building at the corner of Burke and Owen streets, offering to pay an annual rental of £6. The consideration of both letters was deferred —Mr Jas. Moran, applying for the sleepers of the tramway between the' Queen of Beauty mine and the bat* tery. Referred to the Works Committee, with power to act.—Seven persons occupying offices at the Exchange Corner, asking the Council to raise the asphalt footpath to the level of the entrances, with a fall towards the water-table. Referred 16 the Works Committee.—Messrs Muir, Symington, and Partingtoo, re* questing that a sub»raain should be laid down in Williamson street for the purpose of supplying their respective premises. Referred to the Water Supply Committee. —The transfer of the contract for the supply of rations from Messrs Mears and Co, to Mr J. Clark was approved.—lt was decided that the new bye law regarding the formation of footpaths should come into operation on the Ist Sept. -'"' BEPOETS. r The report of the "Works Committee stated that the foreman had been instructed to repair the Bird-in-Hand footpath, remove the tramway rails near the Herald battery, and make good the road, and improve the Queen street footpath between Sealey and Richmond streets; to re-flank a portion of the bridge over the Waiotahi creek, and maintain this road for traffic, keeping one man constantly employed on it to fill in the ruts. Two men would be employed on the Sunbeam creek road, if the owners of the claim did likewise ; and the improvement of Mackay street should be carried out in summer weather. It was recommended that Mr Climo be given authority to cut the Waiotahi aqueduct and also thelower flume, at such places as should be approved by the Council, subject to such permission being revoked at any time.—The applications of Messrs McLean and Climo were considered with the re* port.—After considerable discussion, the applications were again referred to the Works Committee for further information, and the remainder of the report adopted. The Charitable Aid Committee re* commended, regarding medical attendance on the poor, that the medical officer should visit and prescribe for the patient and receive a visiting fee of 2u 6d, but should not supply medicine, and that the Hospital Committee be asked to allow the medicines to be dispensed at their institu* tions gratuitously, or at a charge not exceeding one shilling per head for each day's prescription.—-Adopted.' OTHBK MATTERS. The culvert ou the road to the Tararu Cemetery was stated to have collapsed, and needed repairing at once. Referred to the Works Committee with power to act.—lt was decided to hold the public meeting re the extension of the ThamesTe Aroha railway at the Academy of Music on, Monday next at 8 p.m. The Council then rose.
