The Australian Contingent has been specially included in a vote of thanks to the Army and Navy, to.be proposed to morrow by Sir Michael Hicks-Beach. Lord "Wolseley made a Viscount. It is announced that General Lord Wolseley has been created a Viscount for services in Egypt. Death of Saron Houghton. The death is announced of the Eight Hon. Richard Monckton Milnes, the first Baron Houghton, aged 76.—[He ; was born June 19, 1809, and was the eldest son of tfie, late Robert Pcmberton Milnes, Egg.i of-Fryston Hall, and Bawtry Hall, Yorkshire. Lord Hougbton graduated B.A. at Trinity College, Cam* bridge, in 1831, and has published " The Memorials of a Tour in Greece," and some volumes of poems, after the manner of Wordswerth; the "Might of Time, 1' " Lay of the Humble," " Long Ago," and "Man of Old"; "Palm Leares," &c. He was, in 1837, elected one of the mem bers for Pontefraot, which he continued to represent till his eleration to the Peerage,
Aug. 20, 1863. In 1864 he proposed the retention of a low duty on foreign corn ; but ho would not consent to restore the corn laws. He was a warm advocate of. liberty of conscience, and "considered religion* equality the birthright of erery Brii'on."] .__ . . - . , London, August 11. The homeward Australian mails, dated Melbourne, June 30th, per P., and O. R.M.S.lndus, were dnliveiedhere to-day, via Brindisi. A shipment of 9240 carcases of frozen mutton, per Invercargili from Lyttelton, were examined,to-duy, and-found to be in good condition. Arrived : Mataura, from Napier, May J Bth. The result of the Wellington-Manawatu Railway Co.'s loan tenders, which were to be opened on the 7th inst., hare not jet j been made public. Increase of British. Forces. It is announced that the British forces 1 j in India will shortly be increased by a reinforcement of six thousand men. The Right Hon. W. H. Smith, Secretary of State';for War, stated in the House of Commons last night that it was the intention of Government to release from duly forthwith those members of the reserve forces recently called out who were married men. He further announced that the remainder would shortly be permitted to return to their hiotnes.
