Fatal Boating Accident

JSlapiee, This day. News of a fatal boat accident cornea from Taupo. It appears that on Sunday morning J. B. Ashman, of the Public Works Department, and Mr Kings ford, of the Telegraph Department went f&c a sail on the lake ; when about a mile from shore, the boat capsized. Both men succeeded in getting on the top of the boat, which, however, kept rolling over, throwing them into' 'the' water. Eventually Ashman became numbed with the cold and exhaustion, and the last 'time the boat rolled ho sank. After two hours the boat drifted ashoro, and ifingsford wa§ found more dead than alive, and now lies iv a precarious condition. Deceased was universally respected. He was for many years Inspector of Roads in the Taupo district; about twelve months ago he paid a visit to England, returning to the colony J some three months ago, and re entering the Government service. Deceased was under 30 years of ngc, and was a uephew of Mr R. H. Bold, Inspector of Telegraphs for the East Coast district, who immediately left for Taupo on receipt of 1 the sad intelligence. ' Lateb. Mr Ashman clung 2| hours to the boat, which was being continually rolled over by the sea. Ashman sank exhausted, and the lineman was washed ashore on some rocks. Ashman's body has not yet been recovered.
