A petition for divorce has been filed, in | which Mrs Donald Crawford is made respondent, and the Hon. Sir Charles Dilke. (Undcr«Secretnry of State for Foreign Affairs in the Gladstone Ministry) co-respondent. The harvest is proceeding rapidly, but recent rains have tended to harden the market. Tery little business has been transacted with Australian breadstuff's. The general election for the French Senate will probably take place on the 4th October. r.. The French Press have taken a very offensive tone at the defensive alliance between China and England as against .Russia. August 7. . The town of Kasbgar in Central Asia, which was captured from Mahomed Yakbob Bey by China, in November, 1877, has been re-captured by Yakoob Bey's son, who was aided by Russia. Lord Bandolph Churchill, Secretary of Stats for India, made a statement on. Indian finances, which show a deficit,-in the revenue of three millions, due to the recent military preparations. He also expected that there will be an increase in expenditure of two millions per annum on account of military services. Tenders for the South Melbourne muni cipal loan of £800,000 at 5 per cent, were opened to-day, when the amount was subscribed nearly fourfold. The average price is £104 16s. The branch Federation League of Victoria will be affiliated to the English League. Mr Gladstone is at present cruising amongst the Norwegian fiords in Sir Thos. Brassey's yacht Sunbeam. The proposal in the report of the National Bank to transfer £100,000 from the capital account to a contingent bad debt account has been cancelled.
