PORT CHALMERS.
Festerday.
The steamer Tainui, whilst steaming down the harbor at 12.30 yesterday afternoon, grounded at the lower part of Deborah Bay, in consequence of her steam steering (rear getting out of order. Efforts were made to get her off, bat as the tide was falling, this was not accomplished until nooa today, when, having been lightened by pumping some 350 tons out of her forward ballast tank, she was towed hi deep water, and left for Wel-
lington at 12.45 p.m. The point on which she stranded is perfectly smooth and sandy, so that beyond a few hours* detention she has not suffered any damage. Her draught of water on crossing tho bar in the first-quarter flood was 22 feet aft, and 19 feet 4 inches forward. She takes the following cargo for London :— 770 bales wool, skins, and leather, 58 casks tallow and pelts, 1440 sacks flour, 5724 carcases and 500 halfccarcases mutton. For Bio de Janiero : 180 sacks flour.
