Small-Pox in Sydney.
Sydney, This day. A case of small-pox has been discovered on board the Messageries Maritimes s.s. Oceanic. The vessel arrived in Port Jackson twelve days ago, and the medical authorities are informed that the eruption was visible on the third day after arrival.
Lateb. [Received August 10,12.15 p.m.] Sydney, This day. In consequence of the discovery of small-pox on board the s.s. Oceanic, the vessel has been placed in quarantine, and the patient landed at the Quarantine Station. The case is stated to be of an extremely serious nature.
Arrived, Saturday evening : Wakatipu, from Wellington.
[Beoeived August 10, 12.45 p.m.] Mblboubne, This day. The omnibus drivers' strike has come to an end, the men having adopted the recommendation of a number of leading citizens, who counselled them to accept a compromise, the basis of settlement being a fixed payment for each trip.
Melboubne, Saturday. Arrived : s.s. Waiwera, from IN ew Zea land.
Mr Service has requested Mr Griffiths, Premier of Queensland, to draft a memorandum to be submitted to the various cjlonies embodying their acceptance of the provisions of the Federal Council Enabling Bill, and Mr Griffiths has consented to accede to hia request. His Honor Judge Higinbotham has granted a writ of certiorari in the oase of the two gunners of the permanent Artillery Force who were lately condemned to a term of imprisonment for insubordination, on the ground that the officers composing the court martial bad not subscribed to the oath in accordance with the provisions of the Discipline Act. Mr McGuire, the Superintendantof the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company, states that if the present subsidy be renewed for a term of ton years, the company will be prepared to make the proposed reduction in the cable tariff for press and other telegrams. A grand military demonstration is to be held in Sydney on the 15th August, probably in Moore Park.
The New South Wales Government are making arrangements for organising the reserve forces, and arming them with the Martini-Henry rifle. The Church of England Synod of" Sydney, after a long debate, declined to authorise the formation of sisterhoods. Tfie Victorian Licensing Bill is still under discussion, and is meeting with opposition in many quarters.
