The Police Court examination of the burglar Dunn, who was so cleverly captured in Auckland by plain clolhes Constable Herbert, took place in Auckland on Monday) when the wily man who was "a burgUng" was committed for trial. Before hie committal, Dunn made a wild and irrational statement to the effect that ho was "laid on" to the committal of liij offence by the Police officer ; he said that Constable Herbert, who had another man with him, picked him up in Hobson street, and asked him to drink at the Hobson Hotel; they all went in, ar.d Herbert .loft their company for a time, and returned with an overcoat which be raid he had " made ;" they afterwards went down "Victoria street, where the Constable met another man, gave him the coat, and returning to the prisoner offered him half of ten shillings, which be said ho had received for the coat; this the virtuous burglar refused to take; after "Wandering about, the constable and Dunn went up Victoria street and when opposite the Oxford Hotel, the accused state 3 that Herbert said " there's a good thing on there, but it is too early yet," they then went into a right of way and entered a cottage where Dunn went to" sleep after being regaled with a record, as he Btates, of the many good things Herbert had done in Melbourne. After some time Dunu continued that the constable refcarnecl and look him across to the Oxford Hotel' opened the window and prompted the burglarious one to enter, but virtue arose again and he would not, the Police officer then removed both their pairs of boots and hid them, and went into the he use by the window, asking Dunn to keep watch and to cough if any one came j Dunn remained on the doorstep all this time, and the constable returned with a bundle of money in a handkerchief which he offered accused, who refused temptation once more. He inquired if Herbert had any grog, but was informed in reply that if be wanted any he would have to go in and get it himself. The constable returned, and committed a murderous assault on Mm with a chopper, and he remembered nothing more until he was dragged into the hotel, in answer to the Bench, Dunn slated tb&t be could call witnesses to prove that ho had changed notes in the City Hotel, and could thus account for the money in his pot-session.

A considebable amount of public comment has taken place on the drink bill for last month of the Wellington Hospital, as published by us on Monday last. In order to show the contrast between the administration of the Auckland Hospital and that at Wellington in this respect, we give the drink bills of both institutions for lust month (June), merely premising that in the comparison it csuet be remembered that the number of patients in the Wellington Hospital is little more than half of that in the Auckland institution :—Wellington: Port, 1,4870z*; gin, 218osn ; brand?, 1,8740z5; whisky, 5710z5; ale and porter, 3S!pts; champagne, 28pti«; claret, 2530Z3. Auckland: Port, 854-ozs ; gin, 155' zs; brandy, 2380Z9; whisky, nil; ale and porter, 41pts; champagne, nil; claret, nil. The only theory that has as yet been propounded to account for the disparity in tho consumption of "medical comforts," is that in the Auckland Hojpital two thirds of the staff are Bluo Ribbonites. —Herald.
