A BURNING BALLOON.
Chahleston, June 19,
This afternoon a most frightful accident happened on the circus ground just prior to the openiug of the performance of Eiohards and Leon's Circus. Among other outdoor attractions was a balloon ascension, and just as the ropes holding the balloon were cast off, the overturn of the hot-air stove used in inflating the balloon caused it to catch fire. The burn ing balloon shot up into the air at a very rapid rate, with William Patterson, the aeronaut, in the basket. When a short distance up, the crowd yelled to him to jump, but he did not heed the warning. After going up several hundred feet the ballon collapsed, and Patterson fell to rartb a crushed and lifeless mass. Patter son was 22, years old, and resided in Wells* ille, Ohio, where he leaves a wife and family. It was his first ascension The balloon was totally consumed.
