Pasteur's greatest claim to the gratitude of mankind is based on bis researches in vaccination. He demonstrated so conclusively the value of vaccination that no pne, after witnessing his experiments upon cattle and sheep, could doubt the value of this check to a deadly disease. The estimation in which this work is held in France is shown by ths fact that while in 1881 only 34,000 animals were vaccinated, in 1883 the number had increased to half a millior. M. Pasteur has lately acquired much notoriety by his "experiments in hydro• phobia. Tyndall says of the commission which was appointed at Pasteur's instance to investigate the subject that the result of its labors " inspires the sure and certain hope that, as regards the attenuation of the rabic vitus and the rendering of an animal, by inoculation, proof against attack, the Buccess of M. Pasteur is assured."
