OUR MINES.

NEW PEINCE IMPERIAL.

An improvement of a very favorable nature has been noticeable in the reef in the intermediate drive below No. 4 level daring the past few days. The drive is being extended on the footwall portion of the lode, and about 2ft. of the reef taken ; it contains much bright mineral, favorable for gold, and is encased in good sandstone, having clean and well-defined walls. In breaking down the quartz here on Monday night the manager secured a few pounds of specimens, while a further haul of 201 bs was obtained last night. The stone was obtained from the solid quartz, and near the floor, and augurs well for the payableness of the block. .The intermediate drive is about 30ft below No. 4 level, and the reef is standing intact downwards, so that a large block of ground can be opened up here. It will be remembered that some good gold was obtained at No. 4 level, at a point just above the present workings, and it would therefore appear that the run of gold then worked is carrying downwards. It is not improbable that a winze will be sunk from here to the intermediate level, which will greatly improve the ventilation. This patch is about 146 ft. from the winze, and a similar distance from the Hand of Friendship boundary. No. 5 level is only a few feet past the winze, but could readily be extended, and a block giving 70ft. of backs would be available up to the intermediate level. The bangingwall leader at No 2 level is about 18 inches wide, and contains excellent mineral. No. 4 leader at No. 5 level is in easily worked country, and averages from ladwts to an ounce to (ho load. CAMBBIA. The manager reported yesterday at follows:—'"The eastern drive at No. 3 level is in a distance of 73ft. from the

crosscut. The reef is about Bft. in thick- ; ness in the foce. The men are still en-I gaged in breaking out quartz oo the! hangingwall of the reef near the end of the crosscut; gold is frequently seen in breaking out the quartz, but no picked stone has been obtained from here during the week. I am preparing for timber here; there is another set to put in before we can commence to sink the winze, which will be about the end of this week. We think this would be Ihe best place to put it down. Gold is showing—it is from here the last 501bs of specimens were obtained —where this winze will be■ ispmmenced, nearly in a line with the winze that was sunk from No. 2 level, but JOft. further towards the hangingwall. The men are still working in the hangingwall ! in the western drive on quartz, to meet the men that are working on the bangingwt;il from the eastern drive; gold is frequently seen here. The intermediate drive east is in a distance of 82 feet from thb winze. The reef here is about 7ft io thickness; there is good mineral in the hangingwall portion of it, and gold was also seen in it yesterday. The intermediate drive west is in a distance of 71ft from the winze, and nearly up to the Darwin boundary. I will not drive any further here until it is surveyed. There are about Bft of crushing dirt here, and gold is seen occasionally in stringers on the hangingwall. No. 2 stope west is along 20ft from the winze; there are about 4ft of quartz being taken out; gold is frequently seen in it in breaking. Stoping operations are being continued above No. 2 level; gold is seen occasionally through the quartz, but there is nothing new to report from here. I have commenced to sink a winze on the hangingwall portion of this reef to-day. 210 loads of quartz have been crushed during the week for 6030zs of amalgam.—fl. W. Mooee." DARWIN. The manager reports for the past week as follows :—" The drive on the reef at j No. 3 levei is in a distance of 193 ft. from the joint crosscut. We have been taking about 6ft. of the reef. We have now started to get on the hangingwall of the reef again ; there is about lft. of quartz on the hangingwall carrying nice mineral. No. 1 stope west is along 13ft. from the winze; dabs and colors of gold are seen here in a stringer on the hangingwall of the reef. No. 3 stope east is along 21ft. from the winze ; colors of gold are seen here in the hangingwall of the reef. The quartz going through the battery is shaping for about 15dwts per- load.—-H. W. Mooee." NEW MANUKAU. No. 3 leader has junctioned with No. 2 reef, and a/ewjco!ors of gold were seen. A trial lot of the reef is now being crushed at the Golden Crown battery. THAMES GOLDEN CROWN. The chamber at the bottom of the shaft has been finished, and crosscutting will be commenced at once. GOLD RETURNS. Reu*3N Pare.—Gentles and party's crushing produced. 17ozs 4dwts gold. KtrßANtri Hill.—A crushing for Le Manquais and party has yielded Bozs lOdwts gold.
