BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual meeting of the above Council was held in the Chambers last night when there were present :•—Crs McGowan (in the Chair), Bawden, Danby, McAndrew, Reid, and Wood.
The minutes of the previous meeting! were read and confirmed.
Several persons wrote complaining of the state of various parts of the Borough, and were referred to the Works Committee.—Thos. Dick wrote stating that he has now paid his rates, and requesting that his name be placed on the Burgess Roll for the North Ward. The Town Clerk pointed out that the request could not be acceded to, as the only ground that would entitle the applicant to registration after the roll had been prepared was that of having acquired property whereas he was a defaulter at that time.—Mr D. Or. McDonnell, liquidator of the Queen of Beauty'G-.M. Co., wrote requesting tb« immediate payment of the sum of £160 due by the Council as a drainage subsidy. The consideration of the matter was deferred.—A telegram was received from Mr W. Frater, M.H.K., slating that the Minister of Mines had increased the subsidy for the repair of the Bocky Point road to £200, provided the Council contributed one-third of tha anaount.—A, letter w»i read from the agent.
o' the JN.Z Ljuu and Mercantile Agency Co,, 'greeincr to renew for another year debentures to the amount of £430 due on the 6ih inst. It was decided that the Town Clerk should tako the necessary steps for the renewal.-—A telegram was read from the Mayor regarding the Spencer Eight Bestoration Bi!!, staling that he would use every means in his power to prevent the Bill passing. On the motion of Cr McAndrew, seconded by Cr Held, it was decided to send printed circulars to every member of the House, explaining the circumstances of the case, and point* ing out the injustice which would be done to the inhabitants of the Borough were such a measure passed.
The Works Committee reported that several footpaths had been repaired, and recommended that broken metal be placed ou the worst portions of Holiest on, Bowen, and Grey streets, and that repairs to the underground Waiotahi flume had been authorised. — The report was adopted.
Or McAndrew moved the notice of motion standing in his name—" That the resolution granting leave of absence indefinitely to Cr Wilson be rescinded," stating that the 1*1 resolution previously passed was an absurd one, as it gave the Cr leave of absence as long as he retained office. —Cr Dan by seconded, as he under-, stood that the resolution passed at the previous meeting only granted Jteave of absence for one meeting.—An^jendment was moved by Cr Bawden^*That Cr Wilson's leave of absence terminate at the close of the next meeting of the Council."—Cr Wood seconded the amendment, which was carried, and the Council rose.
