The adjourned meeting of the Hastings Licensing Committee was hold to-day to consider the Dimness postponed from the last meeting j this consisted of two applications made respectively by F. C. Steveni, for accommodation license at Kauaeranga, and by R. M. Hawkes, for a hotel license at Tapu. The commissioners present were :—Misers E. T. Wildman, (Chairman), A. Butler, W. DReid, and E. McDonnell. sho Inspector of Police reported that in the case of Stevena' application the repairs rrquired had been effected, and consequently the objection^ offered had been withdrawn. The Bench therefore granted the required license* Regarding the application made by R. M. Hawkes for the Tapu House, the police reported tbe stipulation that the hotel should be put in order had not been complied withSeveral portions were sadly in need of lining and papering, and on the first vi it paid an absence of cleanliness was apparent. No. stabling was provided for travellers, and the furnishing needed some attention ; in fact the general appearance of the* house was unsatisfactory. Mr Hawkes stated that he was pulling down hie old stable with the intention of rebuilding a spacious one, he objected to the statement made by the police regarding the dirt. The place required repairing, through the depredation of rats, with which the place abounded, but the cleanliness of the house wus carefully attended to.—The Bench said a majority of its number was in favor of the license being again granted, but only on the condition the house was put in repair before the next quarterly meeting to the satisfaction of the Police Inspector.—The Pojict) applied for costs, us the inspection would be caused by the applicant, but the Bench made no order.

About eight o'clock on Saturday night a store at Leeston.Christchurch, was burnt down It wae used partly by tho New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agenoy Company for storing twine and seeds, and by Mr Spring, as a wine and spirit store. Nothing of the Company's stock was saved, but all tho wines and spirits were got out. Both buildings and the Company's stock were uninsured ; the former was worth about £150, and the latter £300. The cause of the fire is not jet ascertained.
