The gold banked by the proprietor* of the Woodstock claim, Karangahake, yesterday afternoon was of very poor quality, being only worth £1 por ounce. This tends to show that Mr La Monte's statement that the district is full of silver, ii not without foundation.
A meeting of shareholders in the Dart G. M. Co. will be held in Auokland on the 23rd inab., to consider the finanoial position of the company.
At the Academy 'of Musio to-morrow evening, Mr Norton Fleming will appear in his character delineations. He is well spoken of by the Australian Press, and judging by the credit given him by critics elsewhere, his visit should be a most successful one.
It will be remembered that some time ago a petition was signed by a number of Te A rob a householders and forwarded to Wellington, asking that tha district be converted into a borough. The Government have decided not to accede to the reqnest.

As last night's meeting of the Borough Council it was unanimously resolved, on the motion of Cr Wood, seconded by Cr Reid? that a letter of condolence be lent to the widow of the late Mr John Sheehan, M.H.R., expressive of the Council's sympathy with her in her sad bereavement. Cr Wood referred [in feeling terms to the deceased gentleman, and to his long identification with this district.
Thbbe was a large attendance at the meeting of the St. George's Band of Hope, held last evening, the President (Rev. F. G. Evans) occupying the chair. Mr West delivered one of Gougb's temperance lectures, and a number of songs and recitations were given by the juvenile members of the Band. An enjoyable evening was ipent. The names of 34 new members were added to the roll.

An application made |by the butchers in the Borough that their water rates be remitted, as the ordinary rates levied were heavy enough to pay f r the water used by their—no slaughtering being permitted in the Borough —was referred to the Water Supply Committee. A letter received from the New Zealand Commissioner of the Colonial-Indian Exhibition,* sating for the Council's co»operation towards its success, was referred to the New Zealand Exhibition Committee. An application made by Mr J. A. Miller, to be placed on the Burgess roll of tbe South Ward, owing to his change of residence, was complied with. On the reception of the report of the Works Committee re the Rocky Point road, it was resolved that the Mayor be requested to endeavor to obtain from Government a subsidy to the extent of two thirds of the whole amount (£300) stated to be necessary to permanently improve the road ; temporary repairs had been effected by filling in boles in the road between the Tararu cemetery and Kates'. Ihe Borough Relieving Officer was authorised to continue supplying distressed persons in the County with ration's On the motion of Or Wood, seconded by Cr Reid, it was resolved that a letter of condolence be sent by the Council to Mrs J. Sheeban on account of the death of her late bußband. The Town Clerk was authorised to communicate with the Crown Landa Board regarding Waste Lands between the Borough and Tapu. Mr F. Simpson wrote, asking for work; he had worked seven years for (he Council, and had lost his eyesight whiltt in their employ. Referred to the Works Committee with power to act. A notice was received from the Treasury that £53 16s Id had been eevt to the credit of the Borough Fund Account. The County Clerk wrote that the application for a grant to the funds of the Public Library had been referred to the Finance Committee of the County Council, and that be would again communicate wi'h the Conncil. The meeting then rose.

Three handsome boxes of New Z aland woods hare been prepared for Mr Vincent Fyke. Thf y are lined with satin, and in each box is a copy of "The Old Flag" printed on satin in gold. They are intended for presentation, one each to the Queen, the Prince of Wales, and the Duke of Edinburgh.

Thk Christcburch branch of the Sooiety for the prevention of cruelty to animals hare decided to hold a children's Pet Show for the exhibition of all sorts of animals.
Tug Belfast Freezing Company Christchurch, are making additions to their works, which will be completed about the end of November, and oomprise storage accomddation for 5000 more sleep. The killing and freezing capacity of the works will be raised from 245 sheep per diem to 650.

At a meeting of the Board of Fducation, Christchuroh, yesterday, it was resolred not to adopt a suggestion from the headmaster of Christ's College to open the Government eoholarthips to others than pupils of State schools. -
Ax the Wellington Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday judgment was given in a case of some importance to publicans. The proprietor of the Oxford Hotel was charged with Sunday trading, and tbe witnesses swore they bad been invited to drink with the barman. For the defence it was contended there bad been no eviednce to ahow that there bad been aiiy illegal sale. Tbe barman had the right to consume tbe liquor himself on Sunday, and therefore he had a right to treat bis friends. The Magistrate failed to see the force of the arguments, and convicted the defendant, but said he hoped the case would go before an Appeal Court, as the decision of a higher Court was much wanted on this and other kindred points. Probably an appeal will be lodged.
A meeting of Hokitika policy-holders in tbe Government Insurance Assocation was held yesterday evening, vinen the following resolution was passed:—"That in the opinion of of this meeting tbe proposal to establish Local Government Boards in connection with the Government Insurance Association, is totally unnecessary, and if carried out, will greatly increase the cost of the Association, without resulting in any corresponding benefits to tbe policy-holders. Of those present, only three voted against the resolution.
The main hall of the Wellington Exhibition building is completed, and space for exhibitors is being marked off.
