_ Late files of Indian papers received m ouez contain numerous references to the Afghan frontier quenion. It is stated that on the 17th March the scruples of the Afghans were at last orercome, and three English officers were admitted within the walls of Herat. The officers in question were Colonel Stewart, and Majors Holdich and Gore* engineers. "Of late years." says the "Englishman," "Herat has been made the subject of as much mystery as Mecca, and the presence of English engineers within the city » certainly a notable circumstance. There is a tendency in some quarters to exagger* ate the importance of Herat as a strate* getioal position. In the event of our going to war with Russia, it is not likely that Herat would play a totj important part in (he campaign."
