Arrival of the s.s. Arawa.

A CASE OF SMALL-POX ON

BOARD.

Wellington, Yesterday. The Customs Department has received a telegram from the Health Officer at Port Chalmers announcing arrival of the Arawa with small pox on board. A case broke out three days after leaving, the patient being the passengers' cook. Dt Eccles assured the Health Officer that the case was at once isolated, and is so still, the clothing being destroyed; that the patient had been convalescent for 21 days, and that he had quarantined the vessel. The Health Officer has been instructed to consult with I)r Dryedala as to what should be dono with the passengers, and what precautions should be taken to prevent the introduction of amall-pos before the vessel was admitted to pratique. Dr Drysdale advised that they may be landed, together with the patient at the Quarantine Island, their clothes and other effects to be thoroughly disinfected in hot-air chambers, and that the ship and crew be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected by means of sulphur. The superintendent of the quarantine station is instructed to have the necessary measures promptU carried out.

Dunedin, Yesterday. The Arawa has been quarantined until instructions are received from Wellington. There was only one case of smallpox, winch occurred on March 30th. Every precaution was taken, and the case is isolated. The patient was one of the ship's crow, and is now convalescent.
