Tauranga Election.
(from ouk own cokbespondent.)
Kotoetja, This day.
Mr Sheehan had two crowded meetings here yesterday. In the afternoon he met the Maori electors, the attendance being large. A two hours korero ensued, and resulted in the Maoris expressing their entire acquiescence in his candidature, and their determination of supporting him to a man. In the evening the largest one yet held in the district took place in the Maori house ; the hall, capable of accommodating 300 or 400, was chock full. A good deal of opposition was manifested at the speech, and it was at one time supposed that Mr Sheehan's support was weak, before a vote of confidence was proposed, which the opposition attempted to break down to one of simple thanks. On being put, the confidence motion was carried by at least ten to one. The meeting broke up amidst the most enthusiastic demonstration in favor of Mr Shoehan, who it is now seen will poll a heavy vote in this, his opponent's place of residence. From Taupo word has been sent that, sympathising with Mr Sheeban in his recent attack of illness, they will not expect him to visit them personally, and that his absence will not affect his support, 42 electors having entered into a written pledge to support his candidature. If Mr Sheeban* decides not to go to Taupo, which is most probable, he will reach the Thames district early next week.
