The report published yesterday by the Daily News to the effect that the troops forming the various Camel corps in Egypt were to be withdrawn, is declared to be without foundation. It is announced that the Peniusular and Oriental Company's new steamship Massilia, and another vessel belonging to one of the large ocean lines, are being equipped to serve as armed cruisers on the Australian Naval station. • ' ' "'
[Received April 16,10.30, a.m.] Bombay, April 15. The Viceroy of India on the Situation. Earl Dufferin, Viceroy of India, who is now returning from Eawul Pindi to Calcutta,, was to-day presented at Lahore with an address from the local Municipal Board. Replying to the same, His Excellency took occasion to say that the dominion of the Ameer of Afghanistan, had been the scene of an unprovoked attack on the part of the Eussian forces, and he rejoiced to find that the Princes and people of India, were rallying to the British standard* It was impossible, His Excellency added, to foresee the end of the present crisis, but if war resulted, it would be in despite of efforts of moderation on the part of England.
[SPECIAtS. TO THE PBESS ASSOCIATION.] London, April 14. It is feared that the Russians will attack Merutschak and Gulfikar. The European Press urge that Prince Bismarck sh«u!d mediate in the settlement of the/Russian difficulty. The Russian squadron stationed at Naples has been ordered to proceed to the Baltic.
In the engagement between the Russians and Afghans on the 30th March, the loss of the latter was 930 killed and wounded.
The ironclads which have been selected to strengthen the China and Australian squadrons will be ready in May.
