I therefore marched along the river to Omdurman, where I have fixed my headquarters. Here I can quiet'y await the arrival of an English army, should one bo sent to the Soudan. I leave to you the defence of the road leading from tbe sea to Khartoum, as you are encamped on the other side of tbe river. Thus you see that the two routes leading from the north to Khartoum are in our possession, and if eventually our enemies were to force their way a'ong them we could cut off their retreat, and not one of them would encape."
