The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR P.M. Resurrexi. TUESDAY, APRIL 14, 1885.

The colony is suffering from the unsettled state of affairs across the line, and more's the.pity. We learn that a decline in New Zealand stocks has taken place, and this unfortunately occurs at the wrong time, as during the next few months a million and a half were to have been placed for this colonySome hardship is attached to this fall of our securities, as nothing on our part has arisen, to cause it. The returns of revenue published from time to time have shown an increase on the Treasurer's estimate, and although no startling amount of financial progress has been made in the colony during the year, a fair average of returns has been shown—sufficient at least to warrant continued confidence in securities which have ever held their own on the Stcck Exchange. The fall is much to be regretted, but is is not of a nature serious enough to cause any disquietude. The cabled state of the market shows that the last loan—a 4 per eeut.; floated at 995—waa quoted at iMj,

a fall of five, per cent., and -iilthough this would seem no inconsiderable drop, it must bo remembered that the loan was very favorably floated. During a time, such as the present, like disappointments are certain to arise, but they should not cause much anxiety. That the stability of the colony from a financial point of view is firmly believed in, in the English Money Market, has been abundantly shown by the favorable reception our loans have almost invariably met with, and although trouble may arise, "and danger befal," there ia very little doubt that New Zealand's bonds will maintain their position as against those of any other British dependency.
