Mb Lamont, the inventor of the process of gold-saviug which was referred to in our colutns a fews days ago, was a through' psssenger to Sydney by the mail steamer. Mr Alex. Saunders, who is acting on behalf of a •indicate, interviewed Mr Lamont in Auckland stnd drove him'to the Northern Club, where a eonferenee took pUce with a view to the purcha«e of the rights of his patent process by tbe syndicate referred to, which would then be «nabled to resell to particular mines and . battery companies. Mr Lamont declined to enter into any arrangement until his return from Australia a few weeks hence. Meanwhile (.ays the Star) some of tbose intarested are anxious that the Government ■hould acquire the rights of the patent and diffuse its benefits on payment of moderate faes It is said (hat the Lamont s process, which is a kind of smelting of the auriferous quartz, has been successfully tested in California, and it is claimed for it that it saves fully 96 per cent, of the gold. If this be so, it would be seen how valuable tbe intention is when it is stated that the present system retains only 33 per cent, of fine gold, and not ' more than 60 per cent, of it even when it is coarse; Mr Lamont's return will therefore lie awaited with eagerness.
