The cablegrams published by ua to-day are of great importance. It will be seen that the Anglo-Rueso difficulty is assuming serious proportions', a large number of men ere being mussed at a town*on the shores.of the Caspian Sea; it is reported that Buseian cruisers are at the Cape and Singapore; Victoria haa taken decided measures for the defence of her harbor, and doubtless other .colonies will follow. The Sydney contingent for the Soudan has arrived and been hospitably treated at Suakiro. In our telegrams from Wellington* it will be seen that Government is preparing for this colbny'a defence; the militia will be called put if war is declared ; and that applica« tion for a man-of-war to be stationed in New Zealand waters has been made.
The district Hospital is now full to over, flowing with patients, and beds have had to be made up on the floor for two or three for whom escornniodation coald not otherwise be found., This being the case, it behoves the Committee to sfrongly represent the urgency of the matter t3 Government. Thb cricket match Thames Second Eleven v. Union Jack, played at Parawr.i on Sstlur afternoon, was not concluded, but on the re. suit of the first innings it was decided in favor of the Thames. The Union Jacks made 38 in their first innings, and 44 for eight wickets in their second, while the Thames first inninga closed for 46.
Pboikssob Hugo will deliver his third lecture in the Pollen street Lecture Hull this evening, tho "Mouth and Lips " forming the subject. Judging from the tone of the previous lectures, this one will be w ( ell worth hearing, and the audience willj we feel,, sure, go away hotter able to judge character from physiognomy than they were previously.
Mb Adams did not read his paper on " Mount Egmont " at last Monday's meeting of the Mutual Improvement Association owing to tho bad weather, but it will be given to-night. This evening's meeting ia also tho half-yearly one, when officers will be elected.
The -weather promises to bo fine for the moonlight excursion in the Te Aroha to-night, in aid of the Congregational Sunday School funds, and a most enjoyable outing should therefore be the result. The steamer will call nt Goods Wharf for tho convenience of Gra« hamstown residents, and the musical programme arranged should wile away time very pleasantly. Another excursion, in the Kotomahana, is announced for Wednesday evening, to raise funds for fencing the Presbyterian manse property. :■■,. ■'
The receipt of the result of the sculling match at Sydney, between Beach and Hanlan was anxiously waited for by a large number on Saturday night, and general satisfation was expressed when it was announced that the Australian had won the race which made him the champion oarsmen of the world. In Auckland .also there was great excitement over the result, and a large amount of money changed hands, while in Wellington a tofcalisator paid a 30s dividend on a 10a ticket, and the result trai received with cheerf. .
The-To Aroha News rrcords the cure of a child of Mr and Mro Smith, of Waitoa, who has Buffered greatly, almost since birth, and is now, through the use of the Te Aroha waters, enjoying excellent health. The influx of visitors to the baths is so great that the hotel accommodation is insufficient, and Mr*Dobson is about to make large additions to his building. A cheap excursion has been arranged, leaving Auckland on Thursday afternoon, passing through the Thames, and leaving Te Aroha on Tuesday io next week.

A minkb named Isaac Mercer, working near the Waikaia bush, Otago, was killed on Saturday by a fall of earth burying him while he was boi'ing bis billy.

The Herald's correspondent telegraphs from Rotorua:—Our monthly Resident Magistrate's Court Bit yesterday. Mr Herbert Brabant presiding. Amongst the numerous [ cases was one of considerable interest to the natives, in which a dusky chieftainees, deserted by her lord and master, sued for maintenance of (heir youngsters. The Bench divided the children, giviDg half to each. Considerable comment was passed on this judgment, as the husband after having lived comfortably with hia un;mpcachable spouse for over thirteen years, has deserted her and taken another wife, tho only punishment for this being the above verdict. The woman sought to get European redress, thinking there existed only but one law for both races. However, in this she wa3 diasappointed, and now to her discomfort finds that at least, in cases of this Bort. there ia one law for Maoris and another for Europeanu. A Wellington telegram sent early this morning says:—Up to midnight tho Government had not received any important cablegrams from Home. The latest information received ?as to the effect that considerable anxiety was ( felt in London as to the result of the negotiations with Russia, and also Earl Granville bed intimated that England would ' not flinch from the stand she bad taken in this matter.

Earnslaw at the head of the Lake, and after some dangerous climbing reached a point 85G0 feet, above sea level. The sci'ne from the saowfields is described as one of awful grandeur.
