OUR MINES.
CAMBRIA. Daring the past week about 130 loads of quartz have been put through the batteries, nearly all of it. comiDg from the ' stopes above' the 230 ft level, for the good yield of 4/llozs or amalgam. The stopes bate not yet reached a great height, the top one being only about 24ft above the drive, thus proving the enormous amount of quartz which the reef yields. The fact of gold being fout.d bo freely in the Darwin winze at the present depth is also a hopeful sign for this company, auguring well-for the quality of the lode when opened up at No. 3 level. The winze on the main lode will be resumed in time to connect with the crosscut now being , driven by Stevens and party. , DARWIN.. The winze is 64ft deep, and is still being sunk wholly in the hangingwall of the reef, which is of large size, and composed chiefly of stringers. Gold is seen freely in good dabs, and the dirt should give an excellent return when crushed. The manager in his report says:—ln a few days' driving the stringer lode will bo intersected in the tunnel at No. 3 level, and in five weeks.' time the hangingwall lode < ihould.be reached, 25 feet driving then on on the* lode will connect with the bottom of the winze now being sunk from the 240 feet level/ A large block of ground * will thus be opened, and the hanging wall lode be in hand for mining operations. : " NEW PBINCE IMPERIAL. The south drive on the No. 4 lead, at No. 5 level, broke through to the Cross drive on the same lead this afternoon, thus securing good ventilation. Driving northwards will now be started without delay. CALEDONIAN LOW LEVEL. • The trial crushing from the 640 ft. level vu finished at the Herald battery last night, yielding loozs of retorted gold. Altogether 27 lpads of quartz wore treated, *but three of these (from a reef in the k*orthern drive) only showed a slight tracing of gold on the plates, so the return should be reckoned as coming from 24 loads from the crossleader in the south drive. This leader is still being driven on, and is <a nice-looking body of stone 20 inches wide. The return is • better tyan the first trial parcel, which gave about lOdwts per load, and as the * crutbing just completed is large enough to form a very fair idea of the value of the lode, the yield- of 12^dwts per load is exceedingly satisfactory, and * will no doubt stimulate the company to further prospecting of the many promis* inje'reefs they have cut at the 640 ft. level, with, we hope, payable results. SAXON. The No. 2 reef has been cut at No. 6 level, and two men started to. drive sea.wstrd on it this afternoon. It is about Gin. • wide, lying in favorable sandstone, and carrying good minerals. Four men are •till pushing on the crosscut towards No. 3 reef. ~ ,
