Melboubne, Saturday. Arrived, this morning: The steamship Orient, from Plymouth.
Anglo-Australian Cricket.
The cricket match between Shaw's English Eleven and a team representing combined Australia, commenced on the Melbourne Club ground to-day in the presence of a large number of spectators. The weather was fine, and the ground in first-class order, an excellent wicket being available. The Australian captain won the toss and sent his men to the wickets first. The principal scorers were:—Bruce, b, 15; Giffen, b, 13; Jarvis, c, 13 ; Spofforth, b, 50; Trundle, not out, 34. The Australian team were all disposed of for a total of 164 runs, and the Englishmen then went to the wickets, Scotton and Barnes being the first representatives. They made a good stand, and when time was called the score stood at 44, without the loss of a wicket, Scotton being 21, and Barnes 19, not out. The match will be continued on Monday.
