THE ATHLETIC SPORTS AT PARAWAI.
After our report closed last night the the following events were contested :—
St. Patrick's Cop Handicap of 250 yards; Ist prize, £4 and cup; 2nd, £2; 3rd, £1. —The starters.* were P. Herbert [scratch), J. Paterson (sjdi), T. God kin (7yd«), P. McGregor (11yds), A. McNeil (16yds), W. Robertson and J. Greenville (21yds), and O. darken (25yds). Thil was a splendid race, and proved to be the best contested one of the day. All got away to a good slart, when Greenville at once went to the front; and 50 yards from the tape bad a lead of about 6 yards , '- when PatersoD, who bad succeeded io getting through the other men, came with ; great speed, and challenged Greenville, whom he beat by about two yardn; the t&ea was run in the excellent time of 27 2-sths sees., and resulted as follows:— J. Paterson ... ... , 1 J. Greenville 2 P. Herbert ... 3 Handicap Hurdt.es of 300 yds; Ist prize, £2 ; 2nd, £1, resulted— J. McLean "(15yda) 1 T.God kin (9yds)- ... ... 2 P. McGregor (11yds) ... 3 P. Herbert (scratch) ... 0 All-comers' Handicap of 449jdi; Ist prize, £3 ; 2nd, £1— P. Herbert (scratch) ... 1 J. H..Steedman (scratch) ... 2. - T. Godkin (6yd«) 3 A. Thorburn (10yds) , ..0 Twenty Minutes' Go-as yott.Pleasi ; Ist prize,£3 ; 2ad, £1— J. Steadman (3on. 970 yds) ... 1 A. Thorburn (3m. 150yd5)... 2 A. McNeil, hi. Gordon, and C.Kir6y also ran. Consolation of 120yda; prize, £2.r* J. H. Steadman, 1; P. McGregor. 2; T. Godkin, 3. Puke was the only other competitor. A protest has been entered by Allen against Kelly in the contest for throwing the cricket ball, on the ground that he has not been a resident in the diitriet for three months.
