ADISOOVEBI of a most interesting character wm made today (9*ys yesterday's AuckUnd Star) by Mr John Burke, stonemason, at hit yard in Chapel street. While engaged dresiirg a block of bluestone. a fracture dis- - closed, embedded in the stone, a piece of charred timber about four inohes long by orer an inch thick. This fragment of wood is doubtless a relic of the pre-historic forests which flourished near Auckland before the volcanic epoch, but how it found its way to the,heart of the igneous mass, and how it has been preserved-from ~ complete annihilation, •re alike myaterte*. This is, we understand, thefint instance of any vegetable substance being found in such stone, and it is well worthy the inspection of scientists.
