London, March 13. The New Guinea Question.
In the House of Commons last night, the Hon. Mr Gladstone announced that parleying had been renewed with Germany regarding New Guinea, and was progressing weil. The object of the negotiation was to fix the boundary be^ tween English and German acquisition on the north-east coast of New Guinea, and Government desired only a fair division of the territory. The Premier added that he hailed most cordially the colonising pro* gress of Germany, provided the latter country respected the rights of the Austra* lasian colonies.
Proposed Pacific Cessions to
France.
In the House of Commons, Sir Evelyn Ashley, Under-Colonial Secretary, replying to a question, said that parleying was proceeding, with a view to England waiving ing her rights on the Society Islands and Port Tahiti in favor of France, in return for certain reciprocal advantages. Tbe position taken up by England, in the negotiations, was that Government would be duly mindful of the interests of Australia.
London, March. 14. .£20,000 for Gordon's Family.
In the House'of Commons to-day, a vote was passed granting £20,CC0 to the family of the late General Gordon. The motion was carried without debate.
The committee appointed to undertake the formation of a national memorial to the late General Gordon recommended the erection of a hospital at Port Said.
At a meeting of theParnellite members of Parliament to-day, it was resolved that the projected visit of the Prince of Wales to Ireland is ill-timed, but while deprecat* ing any incivility to His Royal Highness, it is recommended that the Irish people abstain from according to the Prince any formal reception.
