WANGANUI.
This day. A magisterial enquiry was held on the baby found in a jar on Loasby's premises on 29th January. John Wakefield, chemist, was charged with endeavoring to concoal the birth by secretly disposing of the dead body. The evidence showed that the accused received a parcel from Miss Roberts on the 20th of May, 1880, but the latter refused to say what was in the parcel. The detective's evidence went to show that accused had said, when first questioned about.it, that the child was Miss Roberts', that she gave it him, and he put it in spirits, intending to do some dissecting on his own account. The information was dismissed, the Magistrate being of opinion that a prima facie ease had not been made out.
