Southern Mining.

The following are the Seefton battery returns for the week ended Saturday, February 14th:—Keep-it-Dark, 3820zs amalgam; Welcome, 3300zs amalgam; Inkerman, 2460za amalgam J Wealth of Nations 201ozs amalgam. The Golden Treasure Company obtained 94ozs of amalgam (top plates only) from 80 tons of stone.

The plates at the United Alpine battery, Lyell, gave 2030zs amalgam from 155 tons of quartz crushed during the past week. The Boss correspondent of tbe Hokitika Guardian. says:—l am very sorry to say that things have come at last to a bad state here. Mr Malfroy is out of the management of the Boss G. M. Coy., and Mr Wylie takes his place. ~ The men in the big shaft were asked to work 10 hours a shift, but before the men had time to consider it the water was allowed to rise, and everything iff at a standstill, thus throwing ' about 22 men oat of work. At the elevators one shift is knocked off, and two shifts of ten hours substituted, thus^throwiog out 12 men. A public meeting of workmen was held last night to protest against ■ lOhours'system, and resolutions passed to fejsft an Eight Hour Association. A large uftnber signed to that effect, and steps will be taken|to unite with kindred societies on the coast. It is much to be

regretted that the efforts of tbe Company have so far proved unsuccessful in obtain* ing payable gold in the big shaft, but whether further prospecting. would prove successful or not is for the company to de- " termine. At any rate the turn of affairs has caused a great depression here, but not altogether unexpected by many."
