BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the above body vras held la3l evening. Present : His Worship the Mayor (presiding), Crs Danby (who was sworn in), Xilgour, McGowan, Eenshaw, and Wood.
The minutes were read and confirmed.
COBEESPONDENCE.
la reply to a reminder from Mr A. J. Allora, Clerk to Licensing Committees, the following gentlemen were appointed to preside at the polls which take place in April under the Local Option Act: — .North Ward, E. Honisg; Middle Ward, F. H. G. Woodward; South Ward, W. H. Crick.
A vote of thanka was accorded G. J. Lawlor for his gift to the Public Library of samples of tin, &c, from Benderueer, N.S.W.
A complaint from the County Clerk, that the track alongside the water race had been obstructed near the llecreation Ground by the Borough surveyor throwing ti-tree on it, was referred to the Works Committee with power to act.
A request from W. J. Barlow, that a few loads of cinders be put on the Eichmond street footpath, near Oddfellows' Hull, was granted-.
Inspector Thomson recommended that Sergt. McGrath be appointed Borough officer under the Adulteration Prevention Act. Inspector Eiley having been re instated as a commissioned officer.—
Agreed to.
Charles Hart, en behalf of himself and 30 ratepayers residing in Upper Albert street, asked that the roads and footpaths iv that locality be repaired before winter.
—Referred to Worirs Cominitu-e with power to act.
KEPOfITS,
The Works Committee reported to the following effect:—Authority had been given to the Foreman of Works to repdr the worst parts of the footpath near the Waio»Karaka School; to clean oat the water-table at tho west sido of Pollen street, between Mary and Seilpy slreets, and improve the footpath opposite Mr W. Hctherinßton's residenca. Air Craig had beep appointed to soil by auction the various flpctions of tho Recreation Ground, sale to take place about five weeks hence, the terms to be —one quarter purchase money on fall of the hammer, and the balance in four equal yearly payments. The works applied for by Mr Dunlop and Mrs Gordon could not be undertaken, owin^ to want of funds. The proposed restoration ef the seawalls of Tararu and Rocky Point roads were far beyond the mean's of the Council, and assistance should be sought from Government for thi; purpose.—Adopted. The Foreman of Works detailed the works done during the month : —Formed Tararu footpath, opposite Bawden and Climo's; raised culvert across Tararu road at Haven street;, macle passable Queen street between Alary and Sealey streets ; taken up and re laid stone cross ings at Bank of New Zealand corner."; laid new culvert across Grey street; kept one man half time clearing drains, which needed it badly; it was recommended that the Saxon G.M.Co. be, notified to repair the Albert street fWtpath opposite their engine shed.^—Adopted.
The Water Supply Committee reported that only a portion of the works laid-'off in the Karaka districthad been authorised, the cost not to exceed £12.—Adopted. The Finance Committee's report, which recommended for payment accounts; to the tune of £134 2s lOd, was adopted*
ABPHALT! CBOSSINGS
Cr Wood moved, as per notice,; that the Foreman of Works be authorise/! to lay down asphalt, crossings at thePojlen street junction of Mary, Sealey, Richmond, and Willoughby streets before; winter.rHe drew attention to the necessity-of the work being carried-outbefore the";fret weather set in. The total cost would be about £60. The matter was, discussed, Cr Kenshaw thinking it would be best, as they could not afford to do all four, to attend to Mary street first, there being most traffic there.—Ultimately it was agreed thatall four crossings should be 1 improved beforo winter, at a cost of not more than £2 10s each.
This concluded the business.
