The ground rent ' for quartz mining areas is now £1 per acre per annum, which the deputation justly urged was too much. The Hen. Minister agreed, and suggested a new system of rental, namely that the rent should be, say, one penny per acre for a first term, and subsequently, when the ground is proved, 10s per acre. He also promised to give attention to the representations relative to applications, and agreed that the road from Mokihinui to Lyell should be opened up. He did not, however, agree that the gold duty should be reduced. The result of the interview is calculated to materially benefit the gold mining-industry. As Mr Larnach will be on the Thames shortly, it behoves our mining men to lay clearly before him the unjust taxes under which the miners in the district are laboring.
