London, February 11. The French fleet have left Shanghai for Sontay, in Tonquin. The shipment of lamb ex steamer Coptic, from Wellington, is selling at 7d per lb., and mutton at 4|d per lb. Mr Murray Smith is protesting against the action of Germany in New Guinea, on the ground that they have no solid claim to territory in that island, and urges Lord Derby to endeavor to induce them to abandon their recent annexation. The majorily of the Agents-General are favorable to the colonies urging England not to recede from the boundaries of their annexation in New Guinea. The Hon. Eobert Meade hai been officially summoned to explain the proposals he made while at Berlin regarding the settlement of the New Guinea annexation question. February 12. An important discovery of dynamite has been made at Paddington. The French Commissioner at the Melbourne Exhibition has been charged with swindling. In regard to the settlement of the Eusso-Afghan frontier question, .Russia requests that the Hindu Kush Mountains be made the frontier. It is possible that England will occupy Herat. The Boers in Zuzuland threaten to attack the town of Naful if they are attacked.

Studd, the well known cricke ter, was present at a valedictory meeting in Exeter Hall last night previously to his departure for China as a missionary. Justice Chitty has ruled that the Australian Wine Company is not entitled to use the Auldana trade mark, as the Auldana vineyard proprietors (South Australia) have registered their trade mark. The Queen and the Prince of Wales have sent messages of condolence to .the Marquis' of Normanby on the death of the Marchioness. The death is announced of the Bight Hon. Sir Eobert Phillimore, the eminent ecclesiastical lawyer, formerly Judge of the Court of Arches, and afterwards Judge of the Admiralty Division of the High Court of Justice, from which position he retired two years ago; aged, 75. The conference of representatives of English Conservatives, now sitting in Exeter, has passed a resolution approving of the proposed federation of the Empire. .
