GERMAN CLAIMS IN FIJI
London, January 20,
It is believed in official circles that the mixed commission which is to be appointed to inquire into the claims of German subjects in Fiji will restrict its inquiries to the question of pecuniary compensation to the claimants.
Germany will be represented on the commission by Dr. Eichard Kraue!, the German consul-general at Sydney. It is stated that Prince Bismarck used very great pressure before Earl Ghranville consented to the appointment of a commission, and that the resistance of the latter to the German claims was one of the chief causes of the recent development of a colonial policy by Germany.
Sir Stafford the Conservative leader in the House of Commons, made a speech yesterday at Barnstaple, in which he attacked the colonial policy of the Gladstone 7 Ministry. He declared emphatically that the Ministry had sacrificed the interests of the Australian colonies to the unreasonable demands of foreign powers.

London, January 2. FENIAN EMISSARY FOR ATJS
TBAUA ARRESTED
A Fenian has been arrested whilst embarking at San Francisco for Australiait is believed with the intention of blowing up Australian prisons with dynamite. January 26. Some negotiations have recently taken place between the Colonial Office and Prince Bismarck, on the subject of German annexation in New, Guinea. Mr Murray Smith, the Victorian Agent General, has endeavored to ascertain the result of these negotiations, but, up to the present, has not succeeded. ,
It'is reported that the British Government intends annexing the whole southern portion of New Guinea now claimed by the Dutch, and that Major General Scratchley will be appointed Governor. It is also expected that the subsidy will require to be increased.
It is stated that England will not interfere with the Solomon Islands.
A German White Book on the New Guinea question is being issued. [
January 29. The English press deplore the con* cessions recently made by the British Cabinet, and which will practically have the effect of reviving the dual control in Egypt.
The Marquis of Lome is canvassing the Agents-General of the various colonies with the view of obtaining their support to an Imperial federation scheme. '
The Governors of the various French colonies have received directions to en* force the provisions of the Foreign Enlistment Act in their respective colonies. The forces thus raised are intended for service in China. . "■■' v
