FOR AN ESSAY.
Possibly the greatest literary prize 'ever' offered is that which fall due on December Ist, 1925, in St. Petersburg. According to the Franfuter Journal, the great friend and adviser of the Emperor Alexander 'l|_ of Russia, Aranjeyeffby name, founder of the military colonies of Novgorod, deposi-J ted, in 1833, in the Imperial Bank a sum' of 500,000 roubles in gold. This deposit is to remain in the bank at 4 per cent, until 1925, and on Dee. Ist of that year— " the centenary of Alexander the I.'st death,,. —the entire sum will be paid to the writer. of the best history of the reign of the Em. peror. The prize is to be decided by the Petersburg Academy of Sciences, one quarter to be devoted to the expenses of publishing the fortunate work. At thil rate the value of this grand prize on the day in question will be no less than 1,918,950 roubles—say^ £300,000.
