Retorting took placs to-day at the Herald battery for the excellent yield of 48ozs. 18dwts. gold, reduced on melting to 47ozs. Sdwts. For this return a total of 30 loads general dirt and 351bs. specimens was put through. 20 loads from No. 1 reef gave 6dwts. per load, and work at this point has been stopped for the present; 10, loads of general dirt and 351bs. of specimens from the No. 3 reef yielded 420z5., of which the specimens produced about 250z5., the general dirt thus giving over IJoz. per load. The reef was broken again last night, but Done of the precious metal was observed. A few feet more driving will take the face to the Deep Level Cross boundary, when a rise will be put up and stoping started. In sinking the shaft good headway is being made ; the country is a favorable class of sandstone, and no water has yet been met with, which greatly conduces to rapid progress. BRIGHT SMILE. The treatment of the blanketings was finished sooner than was expected, and retorting took place this morning. The total quantity crushed was 18 loads of general dirt and 401bs picked stone, which yielded 50Jozs retorted gold, reduced to 47ozs 18dwts on melting.
