A Steamer Ashore Hear the French Pass.
[Per Press Association^
Nelson, This day,
The steamer Wallace left Nelson at 11.30 on Friday night for Wellington, and on reaching Eeef Burrells, near the French Pass, went ashore while going ten knots. She broke off all the blades of her propellor, and some of the bottom plates w« re dented. On being got off, the engi« neer reported that she was making water, and a boat was got out, and the vessel lowed across to the mainland and beached in Waikara Bay. Three pumps, worked by steam and by the passengers, just kept her from sinking, until the leak was stopped with tallow packing. Spare pro pellor blades were then put on, and the vessel returned to Nelson on Sunday morning. Mr Paul, Chief Officer, was in charge at the time of the accident.
