A PETRIFIED FOREST.
An extensile petrified forest exists near Corrina, on tbe Little Colorado, .New -Mexico. Petrified stumps, branches, and whole trees lie about on all sides, the action of the waters for centuries having gradually washed away the hills round about, and the trees which once covered the high table-lands are now embedded in the valley beneath. Immense trunks, some of which measured over five feet in diameter, are broken and scattered over a surface of three hundred acres, limbs and twigs cover the sand in all directions. Numerous trunks in this petrified wood bad the appearance of having just been cut down by the woodman's axe, the chips having been scattered on the ground. Many of tbe small particles and even the whole heart of «ome trees have become thoroughly crystallised and tbe beautiful tinted cubes sparkled in the sunshine like 10 many precious stones. Every colour of the rainbow was duplicated in these crystals, aud thb»e of an amethyst tinge would have passed with a novice for the real ■tow. f ,
