The gun which Colonel Hope is making for the War Office is (says a Home paper) to be, it appears,'a 100-ton gun, firing the enormous. and unprecedented charge of 15cwt. (three quarters of a ton!) of' powder concentrated behind a 12001b afcPtr ' in a 12-inch gun. We hear that tfie calculated Telocity is upwards of 4000 feet t a second, and the theoretical penetration k through wrought iron about 5 feet. As- ■ suming this guv to be'a success, it would have a value beyond that of other guns, because owing to the immense range and penetration, it would afford such protection to our harbours and coaiing stations that it would set free a large number of ships for cruising which otherwise would be compelled to remain in port. We hear that Colonel Hope expects to finish his first gunin from ten to twelve months, including the time necessary for the construction of the enormous plant required; but as he makes his guns in one single forging, the 7 •» " actual construction of the gun is not expected to take quite three months. " What yer goin' to do with that dog ?' asked one man of another who was leading a thin and homely yellow dog by a piece of rope. "Goin' downier to sell him fer a shilling to a man in the market." " Ain't yer had him a long while?" " 'Bout two years." " Then I wouldn't sell him, and not see him any more," was the pathetic '. r rejoinder of the other. " But we'll have. V him back to night. He always runs away r and oomes home. I sell him two or, three . < times a week, and he pays our rent." And -V; he walked on, whistling gaily. - . -.-» "Rough on Cohns."— Ask fjr Welle 1 * Bough on Corns." Quick relief, complete, permanent, cure.
