San Fbancisco, December 24.
The steamer Zealandia has been dotained until date from the 20th. The non-arrival in time of the English mail was owing to severe storms, which also drowned the wires, aud interrupted telegraphic communication. An eleven days' south-east storm had prevailed in California up to the time of the steamer's Sailing, doiug much damage.
The steamship Zealandia, which was due in San Francisco on Nov. 29th, was delayed until the morning of December 2nd by the breaking of the piston of the high pressure engine, an the 21st ult., just before reaching Honolulu. Bennet Mackay's commercial cables were opened on December 23rd, at the Offices of the Commercial Cable Co. ,N«w York.
The Plymouth Church is boycotting Beecher for his democracy.
The American Government has concluded a treaty with the Republic of Nicaragua for the construction by the United States of a canal, railway, and telegraph line across the Isthmus, and a body of officers and men have been despatched to carry out the surveys. The canal route lies between Greytown on the Atlantic, and Port San Juan Del Pur on the Atlantic, It is said that from! New York to Ban Francisco by this route for sailing vessels the time is lessened by four days.
The reciprocity treaty betwepn the United States and the Sandwich Islands was signed at Washington during December.
Fred. Archer, the English jockey, arrived at New York on December 4th. He felt so low spirited and homesick on landing that he was with difficulty pre* vented from returning to England on the next trip of the steamer.
An effort is to be made in America to raise 100,000 dollars a ypar to pay the Irish National members of the English Parliament.
Bradshaw of December 20th, says there are now 316,000 manufacturing operatives out of work in the United States from the shutting down of establishments. This is 23 per cent, of the whole number employed four years ago.
Elaine's defeat for the Presidency has cost Jay Gould a cool million of dollars in lost bets.
Vanderbilt, the millionarie, filled a judgment against ex President Grant on Dec. Bth for 155,000 dollars. Grant is nearly reduced to penury, and President Arthur recommends that he be pensioned by the Government. :
Another aggressive religious organization, similar to the Salvation Army, and called " The Pacific Coast Holiness Association," has been started in San Francisco. The Adelphi Theatre has been leased for a meeting place. They claim perfect purity of life and conduct.
The proposal of reciprocity of trade between Canada and the United States is being freely discussed. The fishery interest in New Zealand resists the free admission of British caught fish into American markets (?).
