Mb David Nathan laid the foundation stone of the new Auckland Jewish Synagogue yesterday afternoon, in the presence of a large assemblage. AtrauaTtrs G-uebbeb, second-cabin steward of the steamer Coptic, fell through the hatch into the hold, a distance of 25 feet, in Wellington yesterday. He received internal injuries which caused his death. A deoiaeation in reply to the action for slander rommenced by an Auckland clergyman against a sea captain is filed. It consists of a general denial of plaintiff's allegations, and a statement that if any communications such as are alleged were made by the captain, they were privileged.
