CHRISTCHURCH SCHOOL DISMISSALS.
Today was generally-observed as the breaking>up day of the various schools on the ihames, and was consequently quite a gala day among the children, who always look forward with zest to the " holidays." Most of the dispersals were attended with some little ceremony, though in this matter the WaioKaraka and Waiotahi Schools were an exception.
High School. The prize distribution took place at 3 o'clock this afternoon, there being a considerable number of parents and friends present. The following programme was gone through :—Piano duet, " Qui Vive Galop," A. Murray and H. S. Kilgour; Chorus, " See How Brightly " ; Reading, "Mr Bumble's Courtship," H. S. Kilgour; Piano Solo, " Massa's in the Cold Ground," H. Coney:. Trio (8 voices of girls), " Over Mountain, Over Mead; Reading, " Mr Bumble After Marriage," Jessie Murray; Piano duet, "Overture Maritana," E. M. Adams and N. Wilson ; Beading, "The Builders," E. Miller; Piano Solo, " The Cascade," J. Murray ; Duet (by 6 voices of boys). " Kathleen Aroon"; Eeading, "The Village Poorhouse," A. Styak ; Piano duet, " Les Huguenots," N. Kilgour and M. Eauacranga Boys' SchoolAt this school, which dispersed at 3 o'clock, there was a splendid exhibition of drawing and mapping, the pictures being hung all round the big room of the school. There were a great many more exhibits than last year, and the interest taken by the scholars ia shown by the fact that over 49 pictures have been framed. The drawings are well executed, and are thoroughly worthy of inspection. No prizes have been given this year, but the following pupils deserve mention for the excellence of their work : —Class 6—Boys : W. Kiely, E. Bates, E. Waite, M. Fleming : girls: A. Hamerton, Lena Gibbons, Amy Phillips, and Blanche Morgan. Class 5 :—Boys : J. McAndrew, H. Driver, A. Percy, J. Watson, and F. Gibbons. Class 4—Boys :L. Yon Hotter, V. Savage, and A. Osborne ; Annie j Leathart. Class 3—Boys: W.Constant, J. O'Eeilly, W. McDonald, H. Minns; Girls: B. Leathart, Grace Kerr. Map ping—Class 6 : Amy Phillips, E. Waite, H. Jackson, Blanche Morgan, Amy Hamraerton, Lizzie Savage, M. Fleming. Class 5 : H. Driver and Lucy Onyon; Class 4: Edith Fugill, Clara Gerring, ard Annie Leathart. Sewing: Amy and Mildred Hammerton and Edith Fugill deserve special mention. On the parents and friends assembling in the infant room, the following programme was carried out: — Song by children, "Jack Frost; " Ee^ citations, L. Walton and F. Harris; Recitation ' by all, " Casabianca; " Song, " Clap ! Hurrah; " Extension exercises ; Recitations, Amy Anderson, Cyril-yon Rotter, and Kate Sheard ; Song, by all. " Grammar Song; " Counting; Song, by all, " Now Hurrah."
An adjournment was then made to the Upper School-room, where an address waa given by the Chairman, a song, " Come now let our voices ring," a recitation by Annie Price, and a concluding song, " Farewell to study." This evening an entertainment will be given, including songs, an address, and an extravaganza. Kauaeranga Girls' School. The dismissal took place this afternoon, the following being the PEIZE LIST. Brown, M. Guthrie, E. Gibb.— A number of attendance certificates were given, the following children never having been absent:—Girls : S. Coad, E. Benshaw, L. West, M. Morton, M. Dick, J. Gibb, M. Tararu School. This School broke up at 2 o'clock, the building being tastefully decorated. Present —Messrs Wolff (Chairman), Fricker, and Dennerly, Committeemen. The proceedings opened with a holiday song, after which Mr Wolff presented the following special prizes :—Florence Fletcher, Jessie Heighway, and James Kimlin, in honor of having passed the scholarship examination ; Annie Hall, general pvoflciency and good conduct; several other prizes were also presented to the junior classes. Certificates of good attendance were presented to George Cox (Ist class), Albeyt Poulgrain, Jas. McWatters, and Victor Casey (2nd class). Miss Annie Hall then stepped forward and presented Mr Colhouu with a "History of the World " in two volumes, a pen, and a Christmas card, reading at the same time, on behalf of the other scholars, the following address:—" We, the scholarship pupils of the Tararu School^ beg your acceptance of this small present as a token of esteem
and gratitude for your untiring efforts on our behalf. Trusting you may continue to prosper as you have hitherto done, we are, &c. (signed by ten pupils). Mr Col« horn 'wiving replied in suitable terms, Mr Wulff adiiresspd the pupils at considerable length, advising them as to their future career, and impressing upon them the necessity of regular attendance. He also complimented the teachers upon the efficiency of the school. Messrs Fricker and Dennerly also addressed those assembled, after which Mr Colhoun thanked the teachers for their energy and perseverance during the past twelve months, and the proceedings terminated .with the National Anthem. .
Farawai School The prizes were presented by Mrs Gillespie at 2 o'clock as follows :— Prize for special subjects—French and Algebra, Kathleen Gillespie; first prize in school, Martha Stilwell. Standabd .vi—Second in the school, Maria Hale. Standard v. —Ist, Lucy Gillespie; 2nd, Harry Giilespie ; 3rd, Francis West; Mr Marshall's prize for Writing, Robert Lloyd; progress, French and Algebra, Arthur Snaith ; Needlework, L. Gillespie and L. Murdoch; Singing, R. Gillespie and Emily Cropp; Diligence and Good Conduct, Elizabeth Murdoch and Samuel Carson.
