Charles Mathers was arrested in Cork while taking passage to America, on a charge of embezzlement, and was lodged m tke local Bridewell.. His gaoler havirg: business in the cell, west into tb« apartment, and Mathers walked out and turned the key. H© proceeded to the Bridewell keeper's wife and telling her that her husband had a fit, he managed to get he; into the cell also, and then decamped.
