OUR MINES.
DART,
The direcbrs have at last yielded to the frequent representations made by the mine manager, and consented- to the prosecution of an important prospecting work, riz, : the extension of the No. 3 level north* western crosscut, so as to cut (at a depth of 160 ft. vertical below the creek level, which is the lowest point to which they have hitherto been worked) all the reefs in the neighborhood of McCollum and Co.'s workings in the Te Papa Gully. The total distance to drive is some 400 or SCO feet, and the work will be let in 100 ft. sections, tenders being elsewhere invited up to Tuesday next for the first section. The first reef cut should be You Tempskey's lode, which gave good returns near the surface; and which should come to hand in about 50ft, while the other bodies of quartz will be cut at intervals further on. The success which has attended the workings on the No. 2 reef down to No. 4 level is a very favor* able augury for the quality of the other lodes, and should they prove as good as they were on the surface, shareholders may look forward to a prosperous future. In the east drive at No. 4 level on No. 2 reef the bangingwall branch still looks well, carrying good minerals, and showing occasional colors of gold. The stopes are producing the ususl quota of general dirt, which is shaping payably at the battery. Cleaning up will take place before Christmas.
