OUR MINES.
DEEP LEVEL CROSS.
The body of quartz which we mentioned i a day or two ago had appeared in the dig of the south drive at the Imperial No. 5 level, proves to be a well defined reef two feet wide, which is no doubt identical with the Mariner No. 3 reef. Colors of gold are seen in the quartz, which has junctioned with the leader on which driving has hitherto been carried on. A start has not yet been made to bale the Winding Association shaft, several unforseen things having retarded the commencement of operations, but next week will probably see the engine at work. CALEDONIAN LOW LEVEL. After passing through stringers for a considerable distance back, the south crosscut at the 640 ft. level has again struck solid quartz, but very little has yet been done on it. In the north crosscut the hard rock has been pierced, aiid a very kindly class o£ sandstone is now in the face. KURANUI HILL. In driving east on No. 2 reef at the Albion 80ft level three shifts are employed. The country, is a splendid class of sandstone, the reef is standing straighter than it did where the trial crushing was obtained, and the stone looks very promising, though as yet showing no gold. - As this drive is now advancing under where good gold has been got above, it seems probable that the lode will greatly improve as the slide is approached. The No. 1 reef is being stoped, and though small and somewhat irregular, is yielding good dirt. This block is 90ft in height, and the No. 2 winze was sunk that depth by six men in three weeks and two days, which is very quick progress indeed.
