DUNEDIN.
This day.
Further particulars of the Newthorn fatal affray seem to show that the quarrel arose in banter over a dog fight, aud the affray lasted some hours. Meldrum was found lying beside the creek in an insensibie condition. The principal wounds appear to be a stroke on the bead from the butt end of a gun (said to have been given him by Fitzgerald, who is still at large), and he was also stabbed in several places with a shoemaker's kuife. An inquest will be held to-day. Later. The police have substituted a charge of murder against Crowley and White ; Fitz* gera'd is still at large. The inquest is proceeding. The Trades and Labour Council urges the Government to introduce a clause into the Home mail contract prohibiting the employment of Chinese crews.
