DUNEDIN.
This day. Sailed: Nelson, for London, with general cargo, including 2585 bales of wool. A very spirited discussion took place in the City Council last night on the Sidey compensation claims. Sidey originally claimed £4000 compensation for land taken in connection with the Silverstream water-race ; the Council thought the claim exorbitant, and though they did not demur to allowing a fair valuation, would not entertain the application for such an amount. In consequence of the claim not being made in time, Sidev had no legal standing, and his application was ignored by the Council. During last session of Parliament a clause was introduced into the Public Works Act with the object of making the claim valid, and the application was renewed last evening. The clause referred to is supposed to have been introduced by a Dunedin member, and the Council were loud in their denun» ciationof his conduct. The upshot of the discussion was that it was resolved to sift the matter to the bottom, and with this object a deputation was appointed to wait on the Premier. «
