COUNTY COUNCIL.

The first ordinary meeting of the newly elected Council was held at the Chambers, Mary street, at 2.30 this afternoon. Pre sent: Crs Brodie (in the Chair), Coutts, Greenville, McCombie, Moore, Murdoch, Pitkethley, Steedmao, and Townsend. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirnifd. The following report was laid on the table :—Minutes of proceedings of Coun cil in Committee on the 2nd day of Dec . 1884; Cr Brodip, Chairman : —.Resolved : That as the County elections appear by the Returning Officers' accounts not to have been conducted with a due regard to economy, the Council shall make new arrangements for the conduct of future elections, but the accounts now presented be examined and certified for payment. By request of the Chairman, the Surveyor stated the men at present on County works (at wages) were—ln Kauaeranga Riding, 1; Kauaeranga Valley road, 1; Otunui road, 1; Ohinemuri Riding, 3 and foreman; water race, occasional 2, 2 permanent; tramway, occasional 2, 2 permanent. Resolved : That the Surveyor's staff of men for the present month be limited in number to the above statement; that measures be at once taken to recover all outstanding water charges and County rafesl general and special; that, guided by the solicitor's opinion, the Clerk should, if possible, ascertain if Samuel McCormick is a minor, for if so, the Council cannot enter into any contract with him. The following accounts were examined, and passed for payment: —Hastings Riding, £38; survey bridges, &c, Hastings Riding, £15; Waiotahi Biding, £51 8s; kauaeranga Riding, £5917s 2d ; Parawai Riding, £34,25; Totara Riding, £55 7s; Otunui road, £68 Os 6d ; Kauaeranga Valley road, £10; water race, £47 7s; Ohinemuri Riding, £9J 7s 10d; aid to drainage, £40 ; salaries, £58 6s 8d; legal expenses, £29, 14s lOd; printing and advertising, £12 14*; miscellaneous, £16 16i 6d; County elections—L. Melhose £49 10s, E. Honiss £42 6s 6d W. Smith £2010s, P. R. Gellion £5 19s, F. R. G. Woodward £20 93 9d, J. CM, Gibson £34 Os 9d—total, £172 16s. Grand total, £800 17s 6d; On Goldfields' Votes —Kauaeranga Valley road (P. Trainor>, £90155; ditto 'P. Maxwell), £147—total, £237 15s.—[The total receipts for the month were £4113 16s, and the bank overdraft at date (including the accounts just passed) amounts to £5492 10s 9d ]
