" Here I am," excitedly cried the soughtfor officer; " what's wroDg ?" " Thunderation!" gasped the man, " ever'thing's wrong; the ole 'oman, Jim, and the rest o' nay crowd hey gone to town, an' I can't git—" " Come on," yelled the conductor, " we will help you get it off." "Git off what, mister?'' "Ain't there something across tho track?" " Wall, if yell let mo lone, I'll tell ye arter a while," "and the man sat complacently down on a stump. The train had been stopped now for fire minutes, and the conductor was boiling hot. Presently the stranger rose and said: "Now, if yell keep your t'ater trap shet for a secund, I'll tell ye what's the trouble." " Well, proceed, and hurry." After taking a big chew of tobacco, the farmer continued : "As I said afore, my gang all trotted off to-day, an' I could get no grub, kase I hadn't nuthin* to start a fire with. Y> ill one o' ye gentlemen giro the old man a few matches ? " For once the cheek of a conductor ms outdone, and after assisting the farmer over a fence or two, the tram moved on.
