Mr F. W. Chesson, Secretary of the Aborigines' Protection Society, has urged uyon Major-General Scratchley the necessity for inquiring into the recent kidnapping of natives from New Guinea. MajorGeneral Scratchley replied that he had been chiefly appointed as High Commissioner for the purpose of protecting the native inhabitants, and he also felt confident that the colonies would assist him in his endeavours to suppress the kidnapping practice. In consequence of the firm action of the English authorities in despatching troops to the Isle of hkye, the effect has been to ( overawe the crofters there.
